Dessert

Dessert means different things to different people. In your heart, you probably love dessert. But your heart might be preventing you from enjoying it on a daily basis. Or your waistline. In that case, you might have a love-hate relationship with dessert. But there are ways to enjoy dessert without deprivation.

Everything in Moderation....Even Dessert!
Jennifer Anniston was once quoted as saying, "Everything in moderation." In a way, it's true. Let's say you're lucky enough to go to the Cheesecake Factory for dinner. How can you pass up dessert there? Come on, really? One way is to eat a little of your cheesecake there, then take the rest home and enjoy a bite or two every day until it's gone. Another way is to split a slice with someone at your table. Of course, this is true with any dessert at any restaurant, not just the Cheesecake Factory. That just happens to be this author's restaurant of choice at the moment.

Go Light
Most people cringe at the thought of a sugar-free dessert. The think it can't possibly be good. But the next time you're out to lunch with a friend, you should order a piece of pie and the sugar free version of the same kind of pie (if that's available) and ask the waitress not to tell you which is which, then do a taste test. Chances are you'll only notice a slight difference. With so many advances in sugar substitutes these days (in particular, Splenda) sugar free desserts have never tasted better.

You could always opt for desserts that are low in calories or fat to begin with, like fruit or Jello. Although these aren't exciting, they are tasty, and they can satisfy a sweet tooth. Another low cal option? Angel food cake! In fact, if you take a One Step Angel Food Cake mix, pour it in a bowl and add a 16-oz. can of crushed pineapple (in its own juice, not in syrup) and mix it together and bake it, you have a tasty, low calorie, low fat dessert--even if you top it with light whipped topping! Yum!

As you can see, there are lots of ways to enjoy dessert without guilt, from the decadent to the light.
