Many of us take a lot of what surrounds us for granted. And today we are going to talk about the chocolate chip cookie, something that we all love, but give very little thought to. It is just one of those things that was always there to be enjoyed and always will be. But, everything has a starting point and the chocolate chip cookie is no exception to this. Luckily, the history of the now famous chocolate chip cookie has not been lost in the fog of history.

The humble origins of the chocolate chip cookie

It all started back in 1930 Massachusetts, where a woman by the name of Ruth Wakefield owned and operated a small bed and breakfast called the Tollhouse Inn (sound familiar?). She was busy preparing the same cookie that she always did, an old favorite of both her family and her guests. Much to her chagrin, she was out of a key ingredient, chocolate was melted and mixed in with the dough to make a chocolate cookie. Luckily, the Inn also had a small general store and in there she found what she thought would be a good alternative to the ingredient that she usually used. It was a Nestle's chocolate bar that she would have to use, so she smashed it into small pieces that she thought would melt with the baking. But, as we know today, those early "chips" did not melt and remained in their original state after the baking. She was not pleased with the result, but decided to serve them to her guests anyway.

The guests enjoyed those cookies so much that the recipe spread like wildfire after that. Before she knew it the chocolate chip cookie recipe was being published in newspapers throughout the country and the sales of Nestle's chocolate bars skyrocketed. Sales were so good for Nestle that they eventually approached Ruth with a proposal. They wanted to put her chocolate chip cookie recipe on the back of each and every package of their new product - chocolate chips! Ruth agreed and she enjoyed a lifetime supply of chocolate in return from Nestle. We still find her recipe on the back of each bag of chocolate chips!
